This morning we decided it would be more time efficient to ride down the hill for bkst and hit the road by 8:30, breaking our previous record. A cute hippy cafe was finally open for the weekend and Julie got an acai bowl and a turmeric latte. Jaron had a cortado and coffee cake and ended up stepping out to get a kolache. Julie ordered a cheddar chive biscuit to go in a cute little box that fit in her tailbag and had it later as a snack.

We headed to White Sands National Monument and did its 16 mile loop road. It had rained hard the previous night and there were some areas of standing water but they were easy enough to avoid. The gypsum sand is very fine and packs down well, but there were 2 spots where Julie started fishtailing and handled it.

White sand on my tire!
White sand on Jaron’s tire!
Jaron illegally picking up sand
More white sand on knobbies bc it just doesn’t get old

After Julie bought a book and hoodie she doesn’t need, we continued on to get gas in Las Cruces and then lunch in Hatch. Julie felt like kind of an asshole getting Subway for lunch in Hatch, but we didn’t want to have a heavy lunch meal and get in late after spending 1:15 at White Sands. Here are the craggy peaks of the Organ mountains we saw on the way in to Las Cruces.

Next was ice cream in Hillsboro. Let the record show that AI was wrong about there being gas at the general store and it being open. Neither were true. (Julie did call ahead to ask about gas bc she’s not stupid.)

After Julie bought another book she doesn’t need, we rode another Butler G1 road between Hillsboro and Santa Rita. Good lawd, it was fun. We did this road our first time here and Julie remembered a section with gigantic rocks on both sides of the road and it was just as spectacular the second time. Sadly there was nowhere to stop and take a picture.

After that we got checked in and unloaded at the hotel, caught our breath, and had some legit spicy Mexican food for dinner.
