Hola from New Mexico! We are on our next adventure, motorcycling thru New Mexico again. The last time we did this was in 2018. Jaron is on his KTM 890 Adventure (Pedrito) and Julie is on her BMW G650GS (the Hovercraft). We are going to the WIMA USA rally in Colorado and then noodling around New Mexico.

Julie’s brother was kind enough to let us use his home as our local base, accepting delivery of and storing our bikes (and charging them! 😘). So we got to pack them up in a nice garage in the shade with cold beverages and a bathroom nearby, and even this patio table they very considerately brought in…instead of in a parking lot with no shade for 4 hours. 👍

We ran some errands on our bikes the first day to get campstove fuel and various sundries, chilled for a bit, and then went to see the movie The Dog Stars at a cinema restaurant with Julie’s brother and his wife. It was a great day.

The next morning after fighting with our navigation (again) because we can’t seem to look at it until we are completely packed up, suited up, with helmets on (again). Julie did spend an entire day programming routes and transferring gpx files last week, but we could have just looked at it while our laundry was drying. Harrumph.

First stop was Cuba, NM to a New Mexican restaurant at a gas station for lunch. There were lots of locals getting takeout and one told us we picked the best place. Everything looked good and Julie was being indecisive so the guy at the register suggested a Navajo fry bread meal and she went with it. Man, there is just no faking that fresh chile flavor and texture.

Julie grabbed a locally made green chile beef jerky for the road and Jaron went to pay while Julie was in the bathroom. Later that evening Julie mentioned that the beef jerky wasn’t very good, it was super dry and tasted odd, and maybe I would throw it out. Jaron gave her a bitch please look and clarified, the $18 beef jerky? Julie said wha??? Next time ask me or don’t get it. Jaron said beef is just expensive now. So I guess I’m going to eat the beef jerky.

We planned a shorter day for our first day shakedown ride, because our destination for our first night was Chaco Canyon which involves a bit of a challenging road. <cue doom music>
