On Not Seeing Manoa Falls

Friday after an acai bowl, I set out to hike to Manoa Falls solo. The sun and wind really took it out of me on the mountain and shoreline hikes, so I wanted to hike in the forest next.

I had poke for lunch on the way at a place with outdoor seating only and a line. I had to start my meal standing up while waiting for a seat to open up. It was delicious.

The trade-off for hiking in the forest is mud. I got trail running shoes for this trip to see if I could combine walking/workout shoes with hiking shoes. The answer is: not this time. In fairness, I’m not sure that hiking boots would have made this enjoyable for me either. I forgot to take a picture, but the narrow path was sloped with a drop-off with nothing to hold on to. My gps beacon was dead. I thought, you know what? I’m going to turn around. My wearable fitness said 1.1 miles roundtrip, so I was about 2/3 to the end of that trail when I turned around. As I exited the trail, I was passed by an actual trail runner. Huh.

I did see this heliconia though.

I got in the car to go home and saw another trail head so I stopped to try it. I ran in to the same situation, but remembered to take a picture this time. I lost my footing a second time and decided to turn around. My wearable fitness said 1.4 miles roundtrip on a 2 mi hike, so again, about 2/3. The first time I turned around, the path was worse than this.

On my way down the mountain I saw a peacock!

And this beautiful view of Waikiki.

I needed to get a few things at the store, so I grocery shopped like a local (well, not completely, bc I did not have a dog with me). I had to call for an employee to open up the locked case containing beef jerky. Ok…then I went to the toiletry aisle for face moisturizer and literally everything was in a locked case. I pushed the button to call for an employee but gave up. Then I drove in Friday rush hour like a local.

Jaron & I had sushi for dinner and then ice cream and a walkabout. I really like that they have cookies and cream in a chocolate base here. We need that on the mainland. At the ice cream shop I observed a real life duck lips selfie in progress and then on the beach we saw more influencers, so we decided to take a duck lips selfie. Guess we won’t quit our day jobs.

An immersive art exhibit was open so we checked it out.

This was pretty cool, with a lot of rooms with various themes.

This was about depression in the midst of paradise and the artist’s experience as an outsider after moving to Hawaii.

This was another exhibit, of Spam varieties: hot & spicy, low sodium, or with real Hormel bacon.
