Today we left our hotel in the Adirondacks to take the scenic route north to the Whiteface Mountain Castle for lunch. We constructed our route and lodging around this route bc Julie read about it and it sounded cool and was along a scenic road.

There was a lot of construction today. We stopped at the same coffee place and both additionally got s’mores ice cream as a midmorning snack.
We made it to the turnoff for the castle and it said toll booth ahead. We were puzzled bc we didn’t know there would be a toll. We’ve been avoiding toll roads bc Jaron forgot his EZPass/Tolltag. We pulled up and were told that the fee was $25 per vehicle. We both grimaced. Jaron asked what if we parked one bike and took one vehicle? Well, that would be $45 bc the 2nd person costs $20. Julie said that’s ok, we don’t have to go, and we turned around and instead went to a gas station supermarket deli counter. As we ate our very generously portioned sandwiches outside, Julie said well we’ve certainly fallen far. I was expecting to have lunch in a castle today.
I mean, come on. That’s literally highway robbery. I know it doesn’t make sense the things we are cheap about, but this is one of them. We’ve turned around after facing other unexpected and exorbitant “because we can” entry fees. Like it’s not enough that I was going to buy lunch at the restaurant. 🙄
So we happily continued on to Middlebury, where Julie has relented to stay in a corporate hotel bc it was all we could find that fit our itinerary. The weekend after Labor Day is still apparently a busy travel time.
Indian food for dinner tonight. Chicken mango curry for Jaron and saag shrimp + paneer for Julie (to get enough protein). Speaking of muscles, this morning was the 3rd time Julie was able to avoid a drop during parking lot maneuvers.
Julie’s shoulder is starting to feel the multiple days in a row of riding. We were both also kinda tired today. So I think the 4 hr/day target was a good idea even tho it’s been limiting for planning our journey.
