Mount Shasta

Today we did 2 hikes in the Mount Shasta area. Jaron got the good stuff from the pharmacy today and has been feeling better, but we started with an easy hike at McCloud Middle Falls to see how it went.

It went great, so we went to the not aptly named Bunny Flat trailhead. I mean, the words “bunny” and “flat,” especially together, do not imply a moderate hike. We made it about a mile out with 600 ft elevation gain before deciding it was time to turn around. Julie remembered to put her HR monitor on, and burned 505 calories active with several spikes in to 80% of max HR. It was a pretty good workout and we should sleep well tonight.

But we got this view.

We found a super cute family-owned motel in Weed, CA (named for its founder, not the herb) and got our lodging squared away, and then dinner at a Thai restaurant. The motel gave us these for coffee at their diner in the morning. #adorbs

I kept one for my foreign currency collection in my library.
I really enjoyed not sitting in the car for 5 hours today. Yes, I know it’s a road trip, but it was nice to break it up and get some movement in.
In the travel innovations department, I drink a lot of protein shakes now. The water bottle I use for that purpose was getting a little crusty after being rinsed out and dried overnight every night. I didn’t remember to let it sit to dry our last night of camping what with all the bear talk and arriving late, and after putting more protein powder in it while wet the next morning, it was gross. I was thinking, maybe the hotel restaurant kitchen will let me use their bottle brush. Or I could request a makeup removal washcloth so I don’t make a white one look like I used it to clean up poo. I do have a black bandana, but how will I get to the bottom of the bottle? Then it hit me — a toothbrush! I mean, it’s food. I even used toothpaste so as not to sully my toothbrush with soap (though really I should wash my mouth out with soap). It worked great. I did have to use Jaron’s toothpaste bc I am using tablet toothpaste for travel now. Then I thought, it’s been a while since I replaced my travel toothbrush. At the drugstore this morning I looked for a new toothbrush and wanted to find one that had extra bristles pointing out to make it a better bottle brush. And I found this gem which was cheaper than my new toothbrush:

Much more compact than a bottle brush. I do have a travel bottle brush I used to travel with, but it’s still pretty big. Travel innovations are fun. Coffee stirrers can be chopsticks. Single serve creamer cups can be spoons. Etc.

Tomorrow we will exit California and move on to Oregon. Probably high tail it to Eugene to get our new camping mattress so we can go camping.
