All Hail the Empire State

Miles today: 258
We didn’t sleep great due to crappy AC and woke up at 7:30 (eeew) and got packed up. Breakfast was down the street at a bakery that had legit breakfast sandwiches. It was a pretty big bakery but had an odd setup. You order inside but pick up food outside thru a window, which didn’t look like a pickup window from the outside. Seating was outside and portajohns were in the parking lot, but there was a sink inside that customers could use to wash their hands. The coffee was good and breakfast was filling, and Julie got a mini strawberry rhubard pie to go which will end up being dessert tonight.
This morning we unfortunately had to join some rush hour traffic probably inbound to NYC. We stayed about an hour north of NYC in a small town. Our morning ride was good and uneventful otherwise. We took breaks at a river park and state forest picnic area.
Come lunchtime we stopped at Buns and Cones. I mean, those are two of my favorite things, amiright? It was a diner that had legit ice cream. Jaron saw some scattered thunderstorms on the radar and sure enough, a little after we got going it started raining on us so we pulled over and executed rain protocol. Swapped gloves, closed vents, and closed each other’s back vents. We have the process down now. Gore tex gear with zip vents is the best ever for traveling. No more taking pants off and showing off flourescent athletic bootie shorts to put a rain liner in. Ridiculous.
The rain came and went a few times, and then came with a vengeance. Julie noted that this rain kinda hurt. Guess what? Hail on a helmet has a really distinctive sound. The wind was getting rougher, too. We pulled in to a gas station under the awning and figured we’d fill up while seeing if this was something we could wait out. Except the power was out at the gas station! Julie went to the bathroom with her phone flashlight. We both opted for swapping glasses to non-sunglasses and Julie rain-X’d the inside of her visor. The rain was messing with Jaron’s navigation — apparently the hail caused it to exit or something. Julie dried her phone off and put her weather cover on it. We got going again to the chagrin of our fellow gas station customers. There was definitely flooding in the streets and water splashing over our boots.
A bit later we found a gas station with power and stopped to fill up. It looked like we left the storms behind, fortunately, so we enjoyed the rest of our ride. It took us around Great Sacandaga Lake, which was really beautiful. The road was legitimately curvy and you could see the lake. It reminded Julie of Lake Tahoe a little. We are staying the night at this super cute motel that Jaron found us.
Twinkies today! Jaron is trying out pigtails and said last night that his hair was much easier to untangle.

Dinner tonight was Italian. Despite the fact that the google maps info said dine in, it was takeout. So we ordered items that would fit in Jaron’s topcase and had it on the picnic table on the lawn across from our motel room.

It turns out that there is an ice cream place next door to our motel! One could say that the universe put it in our path. Damn, we already had ice cream today. We were both really full from dinner, so no dessert. I am 100% ok with carrying that strawberry rhubarb pie all the way home.
