Wildberry Hollow Farm

Miles Saturday: 173

Saturday it was calling for rain in the afternoon & on Sunday, so we decided to pull chocks from camping and head up to my dad’s Wildberry Hollow Farm. We had some parts shipped there for Julie’s bike and wanted to get up to see him anyways. There is no cell service around Green Bank bc of the no radio zone, to avoid interference with the radio telescopes. So, this has been the trip of no cell service. We were prepared to some extent from having downloaded routes and maps, but weather info is always helpful. We had also not gotten a chance to update Julie’s dad that we were coming. We went to a gas station that had a payphone but it wouldn’t take any quarters. Julie went inside to ask about it and the attendant let her use the phone.
Seneca State Forest is seriously my favorite campground. It has a pump well and firewood for sale and 2 dead-end campsites. There were a couple of vanlifers there this time and it was very quiet. 👍🏻
We decided to stick to WV 20 which goes to the town nearest my dad’s and is a Butler road. It was really nice and I totally got in to the zone in those 20mph serial corkscrews. I hardly had time to get the hose from my hydration pack in to my helmet it was so twisty.
It was also pretty hot, a high of 87 with humidity. (I know, I know, the Texas has slowly ebbed out from this girl.) We stopped for lunch at a sandwich place in Webster Springs. And then we came up on the end of a parade in a small town and had stop & go for 2 miles until we could get some ice.
As we got closer to Clarksburg we looked for a grocery store and packed our extra bag with steak and ice so that it wouldn’t spoil. So that meant that Julie had about 15# of groceries and ice on top of her topcase, so, high relative to the bike’s CG which is not ideal. It handled totally differently, and we still had the 1 mi gravel road to contend with. I told Jaron if I bit it on the gravel road, that he should take the steak to the house on his lap. But guess what! It was fine. I made it even with that extra weight making my bike topheavy. #fuckyeah
After replacing parts on Julie’s bike on Sunday we just chilled the rest of the day with my dad. We’ll head out again on Monday.
